What’s important to remember is that MAC refers to pink as “warm” and yellow as “cool.” This is the opposite from most brands, whose yellow shades are warm and whose pink shades are cool. So, a N shade has more of a yellow/pink balance, a C shade is more yellow than a NC shade, and a W shade is more pink than a NW shade. N, C, and W stand for “neutral,” “cool,” and “warm,” respectively. NW stands for “neutral-warm,” and corresponds to pink or rose. NC stands for “neutral-cool,” and corresponds to yellow, golden, or olive. It’s rather unfortunate, but, well, that’s just the way it works! You may have to blend to find your perfect shade. I’m going to start off by saying that, though MAC does a lot of shades, not everyone will be able to find a perfect match. Most of the time, you only have two choices. Perhaps the trickiest thing about MAC’s shade system is that you have to know your undertones. The letters There’s a lot of confusion when it comes to MAC shade numbers and MAC shade names, but hopefully, this’ll help clarify things for you before you purchase your MAC concealer or foundation at MAC Cosmetics, Sephora, or Nordstrom. I know, I know I’m awful, and my levels of procrastination know no bounds. Ivory Nude is a little more cool toned than NC15.To celebrate ( ahem) the start of Fall term, I thought I’d finally post some photos I took… in June of 2010. Shell is a little lighter and more cool toned than NW10. So if you know of a good match then please leave it down in the comments so we can fill the chart out! This chart doesn’t include every shade in either range, but I’ll be updating it whenever I find a new match. It’s always useful to know your MAC shade, even if you don’t use their foundations. This is because Estee Lauder have some shades that are only subtly different, and in this case I recommend either looking at swatches online or going in store to find your perfect shade. You’ll also notice that some of the Double Wear shades are matched to the same MAC shade. This isn’t meant to be an exact conversion chart, but rather a rough guide to help you find your perfect foundation shade. However, I’ve tried my best to find the closest shades possible and to include any notable differences where applicable. For example the Estee Lauder Double Wear in shade Alabaster is lighter than anything MAC currently offers. Whichever brand you’re looking at trying out, I’ve created a conversion chart between Estee Lauder Double Wear and the MAC shades to help you find your perfect match.ĭisclaimer: Of course not all shades have an exact match. Estee Lauder Double Wear is my current daily choice of foundation, while MAC offers a huge range of foundations for different skin types and situations. Estee Lauder and MAC are two of the best foundation brands available.
